VIC POWERHOUSES IN HUNT FOR STAR SUN

Collingwood and Essendon are headlining the list of clubs in pursuit of Gold Coast Suns star Matt Rowell, according to The Age.

Seven reporter Mitch Cleary revealed Rowell had met with Geelong coach Chris Scott and footy boss Andrew Mackie at a “private apartment in Melbourne’s bayside” at the end of last year.

Rowell, who the Western Bulldogs are also keen on, comes out of contract at the end of this year, but the Suns believe he is committed to the cause.

The former Carey Grammar product has developed into one of the game’s best stoppage players since heading to Carrara and has played every game over the past three seasons.

Rowell is seen as a Joel Selwood replacement who would complement the likes of Max Holmes and Bailey Smith in Geelong’s engine room.

However, the 23-year-old is a crucial piece to Suns coach Damien Hardwick’s quest to get the club into an elusive finals campaign.

GIANTS CONFIDENT OF RETAINING GUN MIDFIELDER

The Giants are confident of retaining young midfielder Finn Callaghan, despite several off-season departures of key players.

The Giants lost Harry Perryman to Collingwood, Nick Haynes to Carlton and James Peatling and Isaac Cumming to Adelaide over the off-season.

“He’ll make a decision based on what’s best for him and for his family. That will either be with us, or it won’t be,” Giants coach Adam Kingsley told AFL Media this week.

“What we’ll do is afford him as many opportunities as the salary cap allows, we’ll pay him as well as we can for as long as we can in a way that fits within our strategy and with everyone else.”

Kingsley said the club needed to weigh up retaining their star players without breaking salary cap structures.

“The problem is, if you overpay on certain players, it means a compromise on keeping the next and keeping the next and keeping the next. If we were to overpay all three of those players who left – and I’ll say overpay, but it’s just paying them more – does it mean we don’t keep Finn Callaghan? Or don’t keep Sam Taylor? Or Brent Daniels? Or any of the others that are upcoming? It’s a big jigsaw,” he said.
