American star Justin Thomas produced arguably the moment of the WM Phoenix Open with an eagle at the 18th hole of his final round to surge from 13th place to a tie for sixth.

It was always going to be hard to top Emiliano Grillo’s slam dunk hole-in-one at the famous par 3 16th stadium hole during the second round, but Thomas just about did so with a hole out from the fairway that sent the rowdy crowd into a frenzy.

The 31-year-old stuck his wedge from 102 yards passed the pin on the par 4 18th, but spun it back perfectly and the ball trickled into the hole down the slope.

Not only did the stunning moment create hysteria around TPC Scottsdale, but it also earned Thomas an extra US$138,000 in prize money for his efforts for the week.

The two-time major champion’s lifted himself from pocketing US$195,500 to US$333,500 with one swing of the club.

It was the third straight week that a European prevailed with Thomas Detry coolly closing out a seven shot victory with a superb six-under par final round of 65.

Detry’s round was highlighted by an incredible near-ace at the iconic stadium hole that nearly blew the roof off as the ball finished 16 inches from the hole for a guaranteed birdie.

He also became the first Belgian to win on the PGA Tour with his maiden victory as he finished -24.

American duo Michael Kim and Daniel Berger shared second place, while a shot further back were Jordan Spieth and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Spieth dared to make a charge for the title but his three-under par never truly put him in the mix, despite producing a jaw dropping moment with an miraculous par save after being in deep trouble.

Australian Min Woo Lee enjoyed an impressive showing, finishing tied for 12th at -13 courtesy of a consistent week where he strung together rounds of 70-66-68-67.
