Suspicious betting on two matches involving Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic – including one at the Australian Open – sparked a multi-agency investigation into potential match-fixing that ultimately failed to produce criminal charges, a new report says.

Nine Newspapers on Friday reported that Tomic’s 2022 Australian Open qualifying match against Russian Roman Safiullin, plus another he played in Turkey a few months earlier, were the subject of suspicious online wagering.

Police strike force Whyman was launched but could not find enough concrete evidence to proceed after months of investigations.

Nor could a separate probe from the International Tennis Integrity Agency, which reportedly seized Tomic’s phone and questioned him over the matches.

A Tennis Australia spokesman confirmed that its own anti-corruption officers had co-operated with the investigations.

“Tennis Australia’s integrity team has worked with the ITIA and law enforcement agencies since first alerted to concerns relating to betting activity in tennis,” the spokesman said.

“[Tennis Australia] integrity’s role in any investigation has predominantly been one of support throughout. We have been advised there is no current police investigation into this matter.”

Three NSW men were investigated for suspicious wagers; authorities suspected that they were “linked to Tomic either directly or via a close relative”, the report said.

Winnings from the suspect bets ranged from $10,000 to $180,000, though one betting agency refused to pay out due to integrity concerns.

Tomic, who failed to qualify for this year’s Australian Open and is currently ranked world No.212, declined to comment.

Nine Newspapers said there was no suggestion that Tomic, 32, is guilty of any criminal conduct, only that he was the subject of inquiries.
