HARLEY HAPPY TO WAIT

West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid will wait until later in the season to weigh up a contract extension, as the Eagles look to tie down their star youngster.

According to the Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph, industry sources believe the Eagles would need to offer Reid $1.5 million-$2 million for him to sign a deal for his fourth season in 2028.

After being selected with pick 1 in the 2023 national draft, Reid has taken to AFL life like a duck to water, quickly becoming one of the AFL’s most recognisable faces.

He’s the sort of player new coach Andrew McQualter can build an entire team around as the Eagles look to surge up the ladder and return to finals action.

According to Ralph, Reid is ‘happy to wait’ and see where the club tracks under McQualter and remains open-minded about his future.

His partner Carlton AFLW player Yasmin Duursma has been living with Reid in Perth lately, but will return to Victoria at some stage to undertake her own pre-season training with the Blues.

Tasmanian duo Ryley Sanders and Colby McKercher will also reportedly wait until later in the season to consider their own contract extensions.

The trio were a part of the first group of first-round picks to sign three-year deals, rather than two-years upon being drafted.

Other players taken in the first round of the 2023 draft include Nick Watson, Darcy Wilson and Nate Caddy, who are adding extra dollars onto their next contracts with every game they play.

West Coast Eagles co-captain Oscar Allen says he “loves” the football club but didn’t completely shut down reports when asked about his future.

Last week AFL Media’s Cal Twomey reported Allen had ‘already spoken’ to the Lions about a possible move after Joe Daniher’s retirement.

“I grew up in Western Australia and I’m really fortunate, alongside ‘Duggo’, to be co-captain of the footy club. I clearly love the football club and I’m sure things will get worked out,” Allen told AFL Media’s Footy Feed.

Allen is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and is weighing up where he wants to play his football in 2026 and beyond.

“It’s something you don’t really think about when you’re playing, you’re head in the sand trying to get better and improve every day. I’m not sure what the future lies, but I’ve really enjoyed and still am enjoying my time at the footy club, that’s why guys have managers I suppose, so they can look after those kinds of issues for you.”

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan said he was “not aware” of any meeting between Allen and Lions officials.

“I don’t have any knowledge of that meeting. Unless somebody at our club has done that without telling me, but I’m not aware of that,” Fagan told AFL Media.

“Oscar’s a West Coast player, I’m not involved in that sort of caper and I’m not aware that that’s happened.”

BIG DEAL BECKONS FOR STAR SUN

Gold Coast will need to offer key defender Sam Collins at least a three-year deal to keep him at the club, despite him turning 31 this June.

Collins is a free agent but is very keen to remain at the Suns, but the star back would have an “avalanche of interest” if he chose to test the waters with rivals, according to Ralph.

Clubs would be prepared to offer Collins up to four years given his reliability and consistency.

A dual best and fairest, Collins has made the most of his opportunities in Queensland after being delisted by Fremantle earlier in his career.

A strong-bodied defender who is also a very capable intercept mark, Collins has been an integral part of Gold Coast’s back six for several years.
