In what was effectively a dead rubber for his Ranji Trophy side Delhi against Railways, the superstar drew over 15,000 fans to the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Kohli left the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with his international future clouded, after just one strong performance – an unbeaten century in the second innings in Perth – and multiple controversies, separately involving Sam Konstas and a TV reporter.

But with India cracking down on player behaviour on tour, and calls for stars to play first class cricket when available, Kohli made his first Ranji Trophy appearance since 2012.

There was mild booing when Delhi chose to bowl leaving Kohli out in the field.

One fan was so enraptured he ran onto the ground in the 11th over simply to collapse at Kohli’s feet, making contact before being swarmed by security.

Kohli appeared to motion at the security not to hurt the pitch invader.

Extra security had been called to the venue due to Kohli’s appearance, with RCB and Kohli chants heard throughout the venue.

On commentary, former India opener WV Raman compared the Kohli support to what Sachin Tendulkar would receive.

“It is at par, isn’t it? I don’t know when I last saw so many people watching a Ranji Trophy match,” he said.

Railways were 188-7 after 56.2 overs.
