Kambosos torched ahead of potential bout | 00:50
Liam Wilson says George Kambosos is struggling so badly to sell tickets for his upcoming return to Sydney that the show will likely be cancelled – while also promising, this Saturday night, to go and “crush” the fighting Dib brothers, Billy and Youssef.
Davis vs Roach | SUN 2 MARCH 12PM AEDT | Boxing superstar Gervonta Davis returns to defend his WBA Lightweight World Title against WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Lamont Roach at the Barclays Center, New York. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.
Already a two-time world title contender, Wilson is now looking to punch his way into a third championship showdown – or potentially, a domestic blockbuster against Kambosos — when he throws down against Youssef ‘Uwee’ Dib in Brisbane.
Back in July last year, the popular Queenslander kayoed Dib in what would become a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender with his signature left hook, and has now promised to double down during a fiery fight week press conference on Thursday.
During several heated exchanges with Dib, Wilson accused his rival of being “no fighter” while also suggesting the Sydneysider had been talked into the rematch by his former world champion brother.
The fighter dubbed Mr Damage also took aim at Kambosos, who he has been chasing for an all-Australian blockbuster since early last year.
First, Wilson accused Ferocious of leaving the lightweight division once he arrived looking for him.
Within the same breath, he also suggested next month’s proposed Kambosos fight at Qudos Bank Arena — Indonesian Daud Yordan (43-4) — will be cancelled due to a lack of interest.
Asked by MC Ben Damon about Kambosos, and his upcoming bout, Wilson replied: “Is that fight still going ahead?”
With Damon then suggesting that was his understanding, the fighter continued: “I was told ticket sales are going very bad for that fight.
“I was told they’re going f***ing terrible actually.
“I’ll be surprised if that goes ahead.”
Moments later, Wilson continued: “I’ve been chasing George for a good year now.
“Before I fought Youssef, I came up to lightweight and he moved up to super lightweight.
“But if he wants to sell some tickets, sell a show out, I’m up here in Queensland.
“Let’s get it done.”
Certainly, Saturday night’s rematch is oozing with bad blood, much of which appears to stem from a feud between Wilson and former world champ Billy Dib, who exchanged words immediately after the first fight.
During the press conference, Wilson was asked why he wanted the rematch, given it was already understandable that Youssef Dib was chasing the same?
“I need to rephrase that,” he started. “I think it’s Billy that wants the rematch.
“And his poor brother is sitting up here today.”
At which point, his rival interjected.
“How come it bothers you so bad that I want the rematch?” Dib asked.
“Why does it bother you so much when you wanted a rematch against (Joe) Noynay after he knocked you out?”
Wilson: “I feel sorry for you, I knock people out …”
Dib: “You don’t need to feel sorry for me. You don’t need to feel sorry for me, I’m prepared.”
Wilson: “It’s my turn. I knock people out for fun.”
Dib: “Good.”
Wilson: “And if you put your hand up I’ll knock you out on Saturday night.”
Dib: “We’ll see.”
From there Wilson was then asked by Damon if he really felt Dib had been talked into this fight by his brother?
“One hundred percent,” the Queenslander said. “I can read a book pretty well”.
Dib: “Did people talk you into the Noynay (rematch)?
Wilson: “No, that was me.”
Dib: “So what’s the difference? We’re both warriors aren’t we?”
Wilson: “No, no, no.”
Dib: “So you’re cut from that cloth and I’m not?”
Wilson: “Uwee, listen, I’m a fighter you’re not … you’re just a good bloke.”
Dib: “OK, wow. Cheers.”
Wilson: “You’re a good bloke but I can read a book and I’m telling you now you’re not a fighter.”
Dib: “I know I’m a good bloke, but I know I’m a good fighter too, mate.”
Wilson: “No you’re not.”
Dib: “Yeah?”
Wilson: “Show me on fight night then.”
Dib: “I will show you. I showed you the last fight and I’ll show you again, don’t worry about that.”
Prediction?
“There’s no prediction,” Wilson continued of how the fight finishes. “But I’m going to put him and his brother in such an uncomfortable position ….”
Dib: “This isn’t about Billy, brother. He’s not here. I’m here. It’s me. Don’t worry about Billy, he’s living in your head.”
Wilson: “Are you done? Let me f***ing talk … I’m ready, man. I’m ready. Let’s go.”
Asked for his take on the first fight, Wilson said that after starting strongly he became “complacent” in the middle rounds – and overall, under performed — before finally dialing back in and finding a finish in the eighth.
“I landed a shot that closed the show,” he said. “This time, I want a more decisive performance”.
Dib, meanwhile, insisted he had asked his team for the rematch within 24 hours of being stopped.
“Next day,” he stressed
“Because I looked it (the first fight) like a massive, missed opportunity.
“I was on my way to winning that fight.
“So it’s important I do redeem myself.”
Asked about the fiery moments involving Wilson and his brother, Dib continued: “Look, whatever happens between my brother and anyone else has nothing to do with me.
“My brother is who he is.
“I am who I am.
“It’s not about Billy, it’s about myself.
“And Liam had better be focused on me because I’m coming to do a job.”
Soon after, Youssef Dib continued: “One thing to mention about my brother, I’m so proud of him that he did receive that ‘Comeback of the Year’ award from The Ring magazine.
“And I believe on Saturday night he’s going to have to pass that award right on over to me … it’s going to be the comeback of the year.”
Later, Dib stressed again that he was on his way to winning the first fight before being stopped.
“I feel that was a missed opportunity,” he said.
“Things were going the way we had envisioned, (and I was) going over the top of Liam.
“But you have to respect he has that one shot power that can put you out.
“And he found that one shot.
“Credit to him.
“But I’m so happy I’m back here with the opportunity to get my redemption.
“I just have to back myself, knowing I’m on that level.
“Knowing I can beat Liam Wilson.
“That’s what I’m coming to do.”
