The third edition of the Women’s Premier League gets underway this week, with Australian leg-spinner Alana King finally getting an opportunity to prove her worth in the lucrative T20 tournament.

The 29-year-old, who has played 25 T20Is since her international debut in 2022, was overlooked during WPL Auctions in 2023 and 2024 despite dazzling performances in the Women’s Big Bash League and Hundred competition.
However, the UP Warriorz snapped up King at December’s auction for AU$55,000, which proved a bargain following her recent Ashes heroics — she was named player of the multi-format series after taking 23 scalps at 11.17, equalling the record for most wickets in a women’s Ashes campaign.
King is one of 13 Australians that will feature in this year’s WPL, joining all-rounder Tahlia McGrath and pinch-hitter Grace Harris in the UP Warriorz squad.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru have lost spinner Sophie Molineux due to a knee complaint, while Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy will also miss the tournament with a foot injury. Elsewhere, Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner has been named Gujarat Giants captain, replacing national teammate Beth Mooney in the role.
Defending champions Bengaluru will face Gujarat in the WPL opener at Vadodara’s Kotambi Stadium, with the first ball scheduled for 1am AEDT on Saturday morning. Every match of the tournament will be shown live and ad-break free on Foxtel and streaming platform Kayo Sports.
