It was McIlroy’s second ace on the PGA Tour in his career, after making his first at the Travelers Championship in 2023, and it came as he hit a perfect wedge from 119 yards, which was playing 112 yards due to the downhill nature of the par 3 15th hole at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
On the broadcast, fans could simply hear the ball crash into the flag before staying in the cup which put a massive grin on McIlroy’s face as he celebrated by high fiving his caddie, Harry Diamond, and his playing partners, Ryder Cup teammate Ludvig Aberg and amateurs Jeff Rhodes and Jimmy Dunne.

“How about that? In the hole. Unbelievable!” the commentator proclaimed.
“He flies it in, Rory McIlroy. I’d say that was a good line.
“No putts required at 15.”
Meanwhile at Pebble Beach, Shane Lowry pulled off an ace of his own at the world famous par 3 seventh hole.
“Life complete” was the call from the commentator as the Irishman hugged and high-fived his playing partners in a moment of pure joy.
The European Ryder Cup star’s wedge at the downhill 113-yard hole landed short of the pin and trickled in perfectly.
“If there’s a few people there at dinner, I’m sure (I will shout the bar),” Lowry said with a laugh.
“Hopefully Rory’s there as well, I get to split the bill with him.
“It came out lovely just left of the hole, which is where you need to pitch it if you want to get it real close. Yeah, big bounce, it was perfect. It just spun and spun right into the hole. It was pretty cool.”
It was also a massive boost to Lowry’s hopes in the event as it moved him to six-under par, where he remained at the end of his opening round.
The 37-year-old is also making a remarkable habit of creating unforgettable moments at golf’s most famous par 3s.
It was his third hole-in-one on the PGA Tour and his previous two had come at two of the world’s best par 3s, the island green 17th at TPC Sawgrass and the 16th over the pond at Augusta National.
“Like look, when stuff like that happens, I’ve been very lucky with all the ones. There and Augusta and Sawgrass,” Lowry said.
“Yeah, I don’t know what to say, I guess it’s just luck of the Irish or something, I don’t know. I know I’m pretty good at times, but you know, a bit of luck every now and then is helpful, too.”
McIlroy’s ace could also be an omen for the Northern Irishman who, in his first PGA Tour start of the season, carded a six-under par opening round of 66 on the secondary course for this week’s tournament to sit two shots behind leader Russell Henley.
His hole-in-one was the sixth in a PGA Tour event on Spyglass Hill’s par 3 15th hole with the most recent one being made by Justin Rose in 2023, who went on to lift the trophy that week.
McIlroy will no doubt be hopeful of making that a trend.
“Honestly, it was lucky, I don’t see many balls nowadays go straight in the hole and stay in the hole,” McIlroy said.
“Pretty fortunate because it could have come out and went back in the water or do anything. It was a good swing, good wedge shot.”
