Carey recorded his second Test century (first away from home) and eclipsed his previous Test high of 111 during the third session on Day 2.
Carey is now just five runs away of topping his first class high score of 143 which he made for South Australia against Western Australia five years ago.
Batting up the order at No. 5, Carey joined skipper Steve Smith in the middle with the two sharing an unbeaten 239-run partnership to put Australia in the box seat with a first innings lead of 73 runs.
Smith is not out on 120 – his second century this series.
Carey said he loved batting with his “close friend” Smith, believing the two have put Australia in a great position.
“To get us in a really good position on a wicket we still think will be tough as we play on it further and have a lead now with three wickets down is the satisfying thing,” Carey said.
“To stay out there with the skipper, put on a really strong partnership and stick to a method we worked on leading into the series.
