Bulldogs CEO Aaron Warburton says the proposed move is a chance to “put the Bulldogs on the map”, however it has been revealed by Code Sportsthat for it to be ticked off, all 17 NRL teams will need to support the idea.

Apeaking on SEN radio on Monday, Warburton says the Bulldogs have included the jersey proposal in their submission to be one of four teams to open the season in Las Vegas next year.

“We’re actually talking with the NRL at the moment because we think it’s the perfect moment to implement surnames on the back of jerseys,” he said.

“Something as simple as that we think will really engage the fans.”

For surnames to be added to jerseys, it will mean something has to give regarding sponsorship.

Either a sponsor’s logo will have to be removed entirely or made smaller to fit the player’s name.

“We don’t want to approach any particular sponsor with, ‘This is how we are going to diminish your brand awareness’,” Warburton explained.

“Some of the early research has suggested it will actually amplify it just in terms of the amount of interest and eyeballs on that space.

“The size of the logo, anything you do with that by reducing it will reduce the value of it.”

The only time an NRL team have had names on their jersey was in 1998, when the Storm did it for their debut season.

It’s likely that the Bulldogs won’t be able to be the only team to have names. If the proposal is agreed upon at some stage, all teams will have to display surnames on the back of their jerseys.
