SITTING out in the water on a surfboard surrounded by other surfers, all waiting for their shot at capturing that perfect wave can take a while, if it ever comes.
That problem could soon be a thing of the past and it’s all thanks to Surf Lakes International.
The company is getting set to open the world’s first man-made wave pool which will allow surfers of different skill levels to ride different breaks … at the same time.
Located near Yeppoon on Queensland’s Capricorn Coast, the huge body of water has the capabilities to produce 2400 waves an hour.
Unlike Kelly Slater’s artificially created wave pool, called “Surf Ranch”, this one will produce not just the perfect wave, but waves of all shapes and sizes.
Surfers ranging from professionals to beginners will be able to enjoy the incredible breaks without the pain of having to fight for their spot on a wave.
The five levels of waves are listed as: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert and Pro. The different categories are colour-coded with a section allocation so beginners know they’re in the right place.
It marks the first wave pool made in Australia and also is the first wave pool in the world that produces several waves at once.
1999 World Surfing Champion and 5 Waves ambassador Mark Occhilupo, was ecstatic after riding his first wave on “Occys Peak”.
“I can’t believe it,” Occhilupo said.
“This is amazing, I knew it would be good … but not this good! People all over the world are going to be blown away when they see it.
“We’re about halfway through the testing phase, we’ve got up to about shoulder height so that’s great news for us. The best news is that you can make it twice that size and a little bit bigger so we can’t wait.
“We’re just going through the process and are really excited.”
Founded by Aaron Trevis, the Surf Lakes team has been working hard to complete the full sale demonstration facility for the past two years. PHD Engineer and Surf Lakes Director Chris Hawley, oversaw the design, build and commissioning.
The original design was first thought up by Aaron Trevis after throwing a rock into water and watching the ripples disperse.
‘After years of dreaming, designing, testing and building, to see those first few waves role across the reefs was quite a site,’ said Mr Trevis.
