Hurricanes vs Thunder: Final Highlights | 14:38

The Big Bash League’s inaugural free agency frenzy has fired up with the title winning Hobart Hurricanes luring Test player Beau Webster back home.

Webster has played for the Melbourne Stars for the past four seasons after a four-year stint with crosstown rivals the Renegades before that, but the Tasmanian will once again suit up for the Hurricanes.

The all-rounder after made his BBL debut for his hometown team back in 2016/17, but returns as a completely different player.

Webster is currently in Galle donning the baggy green for a second time after making his Test debut at the SCG earlier this month, where he hit the winning runs in Australia’s six-wicket win against India.

The 31-year-old will be hoping his appearances for the Hurricanes next summer are limited by holding his place in Australia’s middle order for the Ashes series.

But when he does wear purple, Webster will serve as a valuable foil to their superstars like Mitch Owen, Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade having accumulated 184 runs at 30.66 and 262 runs at 43.66 in the last two seasons for the Stars.

Earlier in the week, leading fast bowler Jason Behrendorff became the first of up to 52 unsigned stars to be snapped up by new teams in the 10 day window.

The Melbourne Renegades landed the first major blow of the BBL’s first ever player movement window, with Behrendorff signing on for the next three seasons following a decorated career in Perth.

Behrendorff was one of 52 free agents eligible to be signed by rival clubs with the likes of Travis Head, who is only playing BBL and IPL outside of international duties, Mitch Marsh and Chris Lynn among those looking for new homes.

The window officially opened on Tuesday after the Hobart Hurricanes powered to victory in the final of BBL14. Follow below for the latest moves and signing news.

The Renegades swooped quickly on the left-armer who finished the most recent season with tournament-high 17 wickets.

He’ll join a quality pace attack which includes Tom Rogers who claimed 16 scalps, with Behrendorff the fifth-leading wicket-taker in BBL history.

“Moving to Melbourne has something my wife, Juvelle, and I have talked about as a goal whether the end of my career happened so to continue my career and play cricket in a city we both love is a blessing,” he said.

“I am really excited for what the next chapter holds with the Melbourne Renegades but just as importantly for my family too.”

The Renegades missed out on the finals for the second year in a row, but there’s a quiet optimism that they’re on the right track with young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk returning to form in the final game of the season with a blistering 95 against the Heat.

Signing a former international quick on a long-term deal will only boost their chances of returning to the finals next season.

“Jason is a world-class bowler and proven matchwinner, so we’re delighted to have him on board,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said.

“His performances in BBL|14 and over a long period of time shows why he’s one of the most dangerous bowlers in the competition.

“Jason’s experience and leadership qualities will also be invaluable as we continue to develop our squad and strive for sustained success.”
