NRL Legend Critiques Contract Double Standards: A Two-Way Street

Luai and Api named Tigers co-captains | 00:36

Broncos legend Corey Parker believes players who wish to leave NRL contracts early are treated harshly by fans and the media, while clubs who tap players on the shoulder avoid scrutiny.

Parker’s comments come in light of the reports that Dragons prop Francis Molo is hoping to be granted an early release from his contract.

“It’s a two-way street. On the one hand a player might be disgruntled and agitating to get out but in the same breath, the clubs also might be trying to do the same thing,” Parker said on SENQ Breakfast.

“At the end of the day, you’re only in it (the NRL) for a short period of time.

“The clubs, when it suits them, it’s all okay, but when it doesn’t suit them, it seems to be this pushback and uproar. At the end of the day, it’s a professional sport, it’s a business.”

Parker’s co-host Ian Healy added: “There’s fringe players everywhere agitating to get out and also the clubs are trying to get them out as well”.

There have been several instances over the last 12 months where players have successfully orchestrated an exit from their deal.

Last year, Zac Lomax requested to be released from his deal a year early so he could sign with the Eels.

Meanwhile, former Panthers star James Fisher-Harris was also granted a release to link up with the Warriors and return back to New Zealand.

Inversely, the Eels made the decision to release star prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard a year before his deal ended. Campbell-Gillard would end up linking with the Titans.
