With the men’s Test squad over in Sri Lanka and missing the Australian Cricket Awards, it was up to the dominant women’s players to light up the function.

And it took only minutes for things to get a bit rowdy.

Days after completing a 16-0 whitewash of England in the Ashes, the Test players appeared to have made a pact – take a drink whenever the w-word was used.

And because the media loves nothing more than a cliche – see ‘bundled out’ during the tennis season, or ‘whitewash’ after a cricket series sweep – it was used plenty.

But it wasn’t just the hosts who were using the word with superstars Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney both making sure to drop it during their interviews on the broadcast.

They also saved a couple of cheeky sledges for England, and their coach Jon Lewis’ bizarre claim that “cultural differences”, such as going to the beach growing up, were a reason for the Aussies’ success.

Gardner quipped: “Some walks along Bondi have been really good as well.”

Meanwhile Mooney declared: “Obviously growing up in Hervey Bay with all the big waves, that’s held me in good stead to be able to score big runs for Australia.”
