Power Shock: Club Set to Reveal Bold Strategy Ahead of Round 1

Port declare ‘no Houston, no problem’ | 02:00

Port Adelaide are reportedly considering a bold succession plan for Ken Hinkley ahead of Round 1 next month, as the veteran coach enters the last year of his contract at Alberton.

The Advertiser’s Matt Turner revealed on Thursday afternoon that assistant coach Josh Carr could be revealed as the club’s next senior coach in advance of 2026, where he would replace Hinkley at the end of his 13th year at Alberton.

The Advertiser stated that the Power has no intentions of replacing Hinkley before the end of the season, which should this season be his last, may remove an element of pressure from the 58-year-old heading into 2025.

Foxfooty.com.au has since contacted Port Adelaide, with a club spokesperson providing no further comment on the report.

Given the magnitude of the proposed succession plan, a decision on the future of Hinkley at the helm beyond this year could still be a while away from being confirmed.

Hinkley and Carr both re-signed at the club after the 2023 season, however the current head coach was under increasingly amounts of pressure during last year’s finals series to retain his position given his lack of silverware after a dozen years at the helm.

Hinkley, who played 132 games of V/AFL games before becoming the club’s longest-serving senior coach, is held in extremely high regard by players and staff.

He has consistently taken the Power to finals during his tenure at the club, however a Grand Final appearance and the ultimate success has eluded him beyond his several preliminary finals.

Port Adelaide will clash with former club star Dan Houston and his new side Collingwood in their season-opener on Saturday, March 15 at the MCG.
