Labor has exceeded its levels of dishonesty and hypocrisy in the Opposition’s recent forays into the debate on cultural tolerance and religious freedom.

Commenting on the wearing of the Burka by Pauline Hanson in the Senate, Sen. Penny Wong stated that “it is one thing to wear religious dress as a sincere act of faith; it is another to wear it as a stunt.

The leader of the Labor Opposition, Bill Shorten, has called the recent pro marriage advertisement aired on TV “not freedom of speech” but “total rubbish.

Rev Hon Fred Nile MLC responds:

  • “I look forward to Penny Wong using the same degree of integrity and judgment when she condemns the so-called ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’ for wearing nuns’ habits at next year’s Mardi Gras.”
  • “Bill Shorten should take a refresher course in why the guarantee for free speech is necessary for a free society. Shorten’s mindless name-calling does nothing to foster an atmosphere of rational debate.”
  • “Sadly, it does not come as a shock that these alleged champions of ‘egalitarian’ ‘progress’ should display the very intolerance and bigotry they ascribe to their opponents. Their selective application of principle betrays their own deep-seated prejudice.”
