Surveillance Legislation Bill
PRIVACY LOST
Repeal ‘The Identify and Disrupt Bill 2021’
September 6, 2021
The Federal Government and Opposition have voted through concerning legislation that impacts all Australians.
There are three core components of this bill:
– Modify or delete the data of suspected offenders (data disruption warrants)
– Collect intelligence on criminal networks (network activity warrants)
– Take control of a suspected offenders’ online account (account takeover warrants)
The granting of these warrants is astonishingly general and grants unprecedented powers to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC).
A set of powers that can now be granted under these warrants is to ‘add, copy, delete or alter data’ on a person’s online accounts for those suspected of committing an offence or are likely to commit an offence. This means that if you are suspected of an offence or are deemed ‘likely to commit’ then the AFP and ACIC can invade your privacy by hacking into your electronic devices (computers, mobiles etc) and make any changes they deem appropriate.
This legislation will turn Australia into a bigger surveillance state and violates Australian civil rights and basic human liberties.
